Fruit-bearing shrubs and shrubs now available!

Triple Crown Thornless Blackberry

Vigorous and winter-hardy with large sweet fruit. Productive (early August). This is a two-year old transplant that likes well-drained soil.

Soil type: Requires neutral soil, a pH of 6.5 to 7. Plants will grow in any type of well drained soil.

How to plant: The top root on the cane should only be 1” below the ground level. If planted too deep, it will not grow a new shoot from the base of the plant. Plants should be spaced 3’– 4’ apart. Do not trim roots.

WE DO NOT RECOMMEND MULCHING AROUND THE PLANTS or fertilizing plants until after roots are established. Do not plant or pot in any media containing bark or wood chips.

Plant in full sun.

Bluetta Blueberry

Early season, large, light blue, firm berry with a mild, sweet taste. This is currently 18-24” high and likes full sun and moist soil but not standing water. Grows 6’ high.

Soil type: Blueberries require an acid soil, a pH of 4.5 to 6. Blueberries also like a moist soil, but should not stand in water. The plant should be watered often in summer, when it sets fruit for the coming year.

How to plant: Plant roots in a shallow hole 6” deep, 12”– 24” in diameter. Mix soil – 2/3 Canadian Peat Moss and 1/3 soil from same hole. Fill hole 3” from top with mixture. Set plant in hole and cover with rest of the mixture. Water, then mound plant up at base 4”– 6” high with remaining mixture. Plant 2’ – 4’ apart. Water often, but do not over water. Do not trim roots.

WE DO NOT RECOMMEND MULCHING AROUND THE PLANTS or fertilizing plants until after roots are established. Do not plant or pot in any media containing bark or wood chips.

Fruit and Ornamental Trees

These beautiful trees stand between 4 to 6 feet tall (note the Royal Purple Smoke Tree stands between 2 to 3 feet tall) and are between 3/4” to 1” in diameter (mature size of fruit trees 10-20 feet; Royal Purple Smoke 15 feet tall; Tulip Poplar 70 feet tall; Akebono and Snow Goose Cherry 35 feet tall; Kwanzan Cherry 40 feet tall).

They are cold tolerant to Zone 5 or above.

The apple and pear tree varieties are cross-pollinating so having more than one variety in your yard or orchard is necessary for fruiting. The Akebono, Snow Goose, and Kwanzan Cherry, which are ornamental only, and the peach and plum varieties are self-pollinating.

Planting in the late winter or early spring is generally the best time to get your trees in the ground. As long as the ground isn’t too frozen to dig a hole, you should be good to go. Being in the ground this early allows the roots to get over the shock of transplanting and begin establishing their root system before the stress of summer and the work of growing leaves and fruit begin.
