Why Buy Local Meat?

When you buy meat from a local farm, you’re doing more than checking an item off your grocery list—you’re making a conscious choice about where your food comes from and how it was raised.

At Northern Farm & Flowers, we’re proud to practice regenerative farming—an approach that focuses on improving the health of our land while raising healthy animals. Our pasture-raised poultry is moved to fresh pasture, where it has access to sunshine, fresh air, grasses, and insects. Our pigs are forest-raised, allowing them to root, forage, and express their natural behaviors in a wooded environment. We also partner with trusted local farms that share our commitment to responsible animal care and land stewardship, allowing us to offer locally raised grass-fed beef alongside our own pork and poultry.

What Is Regenerative Farming?

Regenerative farming is about leaving the land better than we found it. By thoughtfully managing our animals and allowing them to graze and forage in ways that mimic nature, we work to build healthier soils, encourage biodiversity, and create a more resilient farm for future generations. It’s a long-term commitment to caring for both our animals and the environment they depend on.

Know Your Farmer

One of the greatest benefits of buying local is knowing the people behind your food. Instead of wondering where your meat was raised or how it was produced, you can visit our farm, ask questions, and shop with confidence. We believe transparency matters, and we’re proud to share our farming practices with our customers.

Better Animal Care

Healthy animals thrive when they’re given room to move, fresh air, sunshine, and the opportunity to express their natural behaviors. We raise our own livestock in environments that prioritize their well-being because we believe good farming starts with good animal care.

Exceptional Flavor & Quality

Many customers tell us they notice the difference immediately. Meat from thoughtfully raised animals often has richer flavor, better texture, and a quality that’s hard to find in a typical grocery store. Whether you’re grilling a steak, roasting a chicken, or slow-cooking a pork shoulder, starting with exceptional ingredients makes every meal better.

Supporting Local Farms & Families

Every purchase helps sustain family farms and strengthens our local food system. Instead of your dollars leaving the community, they help support local farmers, neighboring businesses, and the rural landscapes that make northwest Connecticut such a special place to live and visit.

A More Thoughtful Way to Shop

Shopping at a local farm is about building a connection to your food. You know where it came from, who raised it, and the care that went into every step of the process. It’s a slower, more intentional way of buying food—one that values quality, stewardship, and community over convenience.

Whether you’re looking for pasture-raised poultry, forest-raised pork, locally raised grass-fed beef, or farm-fresh eggs, we’re honored to be part of your family’s table and grateful for every customer who chooses to support local agriculture.

What You’ll Find at Northern Farm & Flowers

Forest-Raised Pork

Raised by us on our farm in nearby West Cornwall, our pigs spend their lives outdoors in wooded areas where they can root, explore, and behave naturally. We offer individual cuts as well as whole and half pork shares throughout the year.

Pasture-Raised Poultry

Our chickens, ducks, and turkeys are moved regularly onto fresh pasture, giving them continual access to grass, insects, and sunshine. This rotational system promotes healthy birds while helping improve the land they graze.

Grass-Fed Beef

While we don’t raise a large amount of our own cattle, we proudly offer locally raised grass-fed beef from trusted area farms that share our commitment to quality and responsible farming.

Farm Fresh Eggs

Our hens enjoy outdoor access and produce fresh eggs available in our farm store.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you sell lamb and goat?2026-07-19T20:53:09+00:00

Yes! In addition to our pork, poultry, and beef, we also offer locally raised lamb and goat through the Weigel Farmers Collective. These animals are sourced from trusted Connecticut farms that share our commitment to responsible animal husbandry and regenerative farming practices.

Availability varies throughout the year, so if you’re looking for a specific cut or quantity, we recommend giving us a call or stopping by the farm store.

Is everything you sell raised on your farm?2026-07-19T20:52:49+00:00

Not everything—and we’re proud of that transparency. Our forest-raised pork and seasonal pastured poultry are raised by us. We also occasionally offer our own beef. To provide our customers with a wider selection, we partner with trusted Connecticut farmers through the Weigel Farmers Collective for beef, lamb, goat, and other specialty meats. Richard personally selects the animals to ensure they meet our standards for quality, flavor, and responsible farming.

Why is your meat different from grocery store meat?2026-07-19T20:52:19+00:00

We believe knowing where your food comes from matters. Our meats come from animals raised with care by local farmers using regenerative practices—not from anonymous industrial supply chains. You can ask us where your meat was raised, how it was raised, and who raised it. That’s something you’ll rarely find at a supermarket.

Where is your farm located?2026-07-19T20:52:00+00:00

Our farm store is located at 59 Old Middle Street in Goshen, Connecticut, in the heart of Litchfield County. We proudly serve customers from throughout Northwest Connecticut, including Torrington, Litchfield, Cornwall, Canaan, Norfolk, Kent, Harwinton, Winsted, and beyond.

Do I need to preorder?2026-07-19T20:51:36+00:00

Not usually. You’re welcome to stop by during farm store hours and shop our retail freezers.

For freezer packages, whole or half pigs, holiday meats, or larger orders, we recommend reserving ahead to ensure availability.

What does regenerative farming mean?2026-07-19T20:51:14+00:00

Regenerative farming focuses on improving the health of the land while raising healthy animals. By rotating livestock through pastures and forests, protecting soil health, and working with nature instead of against it, we help build healthier ecosystems that benefit future generations.

What does pasture-raised mean?2026-07-19T20:50:58+00:00

Pasture-raised poultry spend their lives outdoors on fresh grass with room to roam, forage, scratch, and enjoy fresh air and sunshine. We regularly move our flocks to fresh pasture, which benefits both the animals and the land through regenerative farming practices.

Our poultry is seasonally pastured, which means they are raised outdoors on pasture during the spring, summer, and fall.

What does forest-raised mean?2026-07-19T20:50:00+00:00

Forest-raised pigs spend their days outdoors exploring wooded areas, rooting in the soil, enjoying fresh air, sunshine, and a natural environment. This low-stress lifestyle promotes animal welfare while producing flavorful, well-marbled pork.

Where does your beef come from?2026-07-19T20:49:39+00:00

Our beef comes from trusted local Connecticut farmers. Much of our beef is sourced through the Weigel Farmers Collective, where Richard personally selects each animal for quality, marbling, and consistency. We also occasionally offer beef raised right here on our own farm.

Where is your pork raised?2026-07-19T20:49:16+00:00

Our pigs are born and raised on our family farm in nearby West Cornwall, Connecticut. They spend their lives rooting through the woods and pasture, allowing them to express their natural behaviors while producing exceptional pork.

The flowers pull you in. The beef jerkey snacks are a must. Local forest pastured pork - locally made slim jims with different flavor options and grassfed beef stix too. Local fancy cheeses at the best prices around, I always grab a few when I shop. The beef. Chicken. Pork. Prepared meals. Raw milk on occasion. Gifts. This place is such a cool spot, at the same time a throw back to a general store but also meat and grocer, pick your own flower garden, with a modern upscale visit. Any time you visit the Litchfield area, be sure to stop in

My favorite place! A combination of a mini Trader Joe's plus an extensive garden center / nursery all in one! Eggs, milk, pastry, breads, as well as local honey, maple syrup and fresh meats and poultry. Seasonal beautifully stocked greenhouse, perennials, specimen trees and shrubs, in addition to mulch and fertilizer, compost and potting mix. And don't forget to stop by the back pens to see if there are any newborns at the farm! A very special country market.
